Long Weekend in the Abel Tasman Area

After having an awesome New Year away celebrating with friends and quickly getting back into the work routine, Brad and I decided we needed to go away just the two of us and have some good old couple time. Usually, when we are going away for such a short period, we stick to somewhere closer like Hanmer Springs or Akaroa, but this time we both wanted to explore somewhere, we hadn't been for a while and decided to have a long weekend in the Tasman area and also tick off walking part of the Abel Tasman National Park.

We decided to have our first night in Nelson, and I'm now in love with this city. It has a cool vibe, and the atmosphere was great for a Friday night. If you are looking for a spot to head to make your way to the top of Trafalgar Street, they have a great mix of restaurants and bars with live music. We decided to eat at The Vic Mac's Brewbar and then headed to Harrys Hawker House for some drinks.

On Saturday we headed to the Nelson Market, and this is a must see. There is a good selection of food, arts, crafts and produce. We grabbed a coffee, and I had a crepe, Brad had a delicious bacon and egg sandwich. After having a wander around, we got back on the road and headed to Kaiteriteri, which is about an hour drive. After arriving in Kaiteriteri and checking in to our Airb&B, we went straight to the beach. The beaches in the Tasman area are beautiful, they are all white sand beaches, and the waves are calm, which is what I like to swim in. For dinner that night we headed to The Beached Whale, and I recommend having the pizzas here, they are delicious!!!

Sunday morning we drove for 15 minutes to Marahau, these is where we caught the bus to Anchorage to start our hike. We chose the shortest hike which was 12.6km. The walk was fantastic, you can stop off at beaches on the way. My favourite beach to stop at was the water was so refreshing after walking in that heat, but my one piece of advice would be to be careful of the bees, they will sting you, and for some strange reason, there was a lot around. We also stumbled across a wild pig and her wee piglet, they were adorable.

We finished the walk back in Marahau, the first thing we did was treat ourselves to a big burger at The Fat Tui. I recommend the Plucked burger which is a chicken burger with satay sauce, so good!!

Monday it was time to get back on the road to Christchurch, we decided to make a couple of stops on the way. Our first stop was at Pelorus Bridge, which is an incredible swimming hole and is in the top 10 in New Zealand. Our final stop was for a late lunch and early dinner in Kaikoura, I hadn't been here since the earthquake a wee while ago, so it was an interesting drive. We had a meal at The Whaler, which has good pub food and tied us over for the remainder of our trip.

Two hours later we were back in Christchurch! I am in love with Kaiteriteri now and am planning a longer trip back next summer xxx.
